Skip the Shibuya-style crowd. Namba Halloween this year is the square, the stairs, and one wrapped train

Namba Square, 15-18 Oct 2026: free lanterns from 16:00. Nankai wrapping from 5 Oct. Same weekend as acosta on the canal.

NANKAI and Akihiro Nishino's CHIMNEY TOWN open a free four-day set at Namba Square from 15 to 18 October 2026. Hours, yen, and the wrapping dates sit on the event page. This is the walk from Dotonbori, and why 17-18 October is a different weekend from 15-16.

The costume is the street furniture

Osaka already has a Halloween that looks like a street party. This one is built to refuse that. Nishino's 2 October comment on PR TIMES is blunt: pumpkin orange on a public square would pass every complaint and leave no memory of which city you were in. The mark they chose is an eyeball, stuck on trains, the Namba Station staircase, trees, and about 5,000 lanterns. He calls it a little creepy. That is the point.

NANKAI frames it as the first step of a much larger Halloween project and as a piece of its Digital Entertainment City NAMBA plan from February 2025. You do not need that corporate layer to use the square. You do need to know the plaza itself only runs four days, while the wrapping starts earlier.

From 5 October you can already see the wrapping

The 8300-series set 8320-8620-8670-8420 leaves Namba toward Wakayamako and Kansai Airport with the eyeball design from Monday 5 October, "until further notice." It is one four-car set. Standing on the Nankai platform for every departure is a waste of a night. Catch it if it happens to roll in. The grand staircase wrap at Nankai Namba is dated 5 to 18 October. That one you can plan. Come up from the ticket gates and you are in it.

If you only have a Tuesday in Minami, the staircase is the Halloween. The square is still empty of lanterns until Thursday the 15th.

Go after 16:00, or go twice

Plaza hours start at noon. Lantern lighting is 16:00 to 21:00. Noon is useful if you hate crowds and want the objects in daylight. It is a poor time if the press images of a red lantern field are why you came. I would walk Dotonbori first, eat, then cut south to the square for the last two hours.

XR with MR goggles is listed 13:00 to 21:00, free after a survey, no age limit, still marked as planned on the official site. NANKAI also says it will run AI cameras to score visitor emotion. They write that the video is processed as statistics, not as named faces. If that bothers you, skip lingering in front of the cameras and still walk the lanterns. The square is a public plaza, not a ticket hall.

Saturday and Sunday collide with acosta on the canal

17 and 18 October are also acosta! Dotonbori. That event is ticketed, 10:30 to 18:30, photography ends at 17:30, changing rooms at Chuo Sports Center. If you hold an acosta pass, finish the canal while the light is usable, then walk. Ebisu-bashi to Namba Square is 8 to 12 minutes on Midosuji or through Namba CITY. Doing both in one morning is messy. Doing canal then square after 16:00 is the version that actually fits.

Thursday 15 and Friday 16 are quieter on the canal. Those are the nights I would pick if Halloween at the square is the only goal. GREATER NAMBA FESTIVAL is the month-long wrapper, 10 October to 15 November, with stamp rallies at Parks, Takashimaya, and Tsutenkaku. Treat that as extra walking, not as a reason to skip the lantern hours.

Official plaza images are concepts. Some use generative AI. Do not turn up expecting a photograph of the finished set. The staircase and the train wrapping are the parts you can already judge in person from 5 October.
