Dotonbori Sukiyaki Institution Harijyu Goes Two-Shift From July 1
From July 1, 2026, every Harijyu restaurant on the Dotonbori strip abandoned continuous all-day service and switched to a two-shift lunch-and-dinner system. The change applies to all four Dotonbori outlets operated by the company: the Harijyu Dotonbori Honten (sukiyaki and shabu-shabu), Harijyu Grill (Western-style dishes, steak, beef cutlet), Harijyu Curry Shop, and the Harijyu butcher counter. Each now closes for a break between lunch and dinner, ending the "through-service" model the restaurant had run for decades.
The company announced the change on June 19, 2026, framing it as a way to "align cooking and service more closely to customer needs." In practical terms, it means you can no longer drop in at 16:00 for a late lunch or an early dinner at the Honten. The kitchen is closed between the two services, and the staff resets the floor for the dinner session.
The exact new hours
The Honten, which serves sukiyaki and shabu-shabu, now runs lunch from 11:30 to 15:30 with last order at 14:30, and dinner from 17:00 to 21:00 with last order at 20:00. Harijyu Grill and Harijyu Curry Shop run a slightly tighter lunch from 11:30 to 15:00 (last order 14:30) and dinner from 17:00 to 20:30 (last order 20:00). The Honten is closed on Tuesdays, except in December and on the days before holidays.
The butcher counter is the one exception: it keeps its continuous service, selling fresh meat and prepared products through the day. There is one caveat. Bento box pickup at the butcher is suspended during the 14:30 to 17:00 window, even though the counter itself stays open. If you pre-order a bento for pickup, schedule it outside that gap.
What this changes for a visit
The shift affects three kinds of visitor. Walk-in lunch guests who arrive after 14:30 are the most exposed; the kitchen stops taking orders at 14:30 at the Honten and the Curry Shop, and 14:30 at the Grill, so a 14:45 arrival means waiting until 17:00. The afternoon gap also closes the restaurants to the pre-theatre crowd that used to eat at 16:00 before a Shochikuza show across the canal. And anyone connecting a late afternoon shop in Shinsaibashi with an early dinner at Harijyu now has to either eat before 15:30 or after 17:00, with a dead hour and a half in between.
The Honten has said existing reservations booked outside the new hours will still be honored. If you have a booking at 16:30, you will be seated. The two-shift schedule applies to walk-ins and new reservations from July 1 onward.
Why Harijyu is doing this
Harijyu did not publish the operational reasoning, but the pattern is familiar in high-end Kansai table-service restaurants. Continuous service forces the kitchen to hold a full brigade on the floor from 11:30 to 21:00, which is hard to staff at current wage rates in central Osaka. A two-shift model lets a single brigade work either lunch or dinner, or both with a paid break, and it concentrates seating into two busier windows. The trade-off is lost revenue from the dead hours, but for a restaurant with a Tabelog "100 Best Sukiyaki and Shabu-Shabu Shops 2024" selection and a steady reservation book, the dead-hour revenue was already thin.
The Honten is a listed historical building on the Dotonbori riverfront, at 1-9-17 Dotonbori, a three-minute walk from Namba Station Exit 14 on the Midōsuji Line. It opened in 1919 as a meat shop and evolved into a multi-format restaurant over a century. The building is one of the few pre-war structures left on the canal-side strip. If you are planning a sukiyaki dinner here this summer, the practical takeaway is to book the 17:00 dinner slot or the 11:30 lunch slot, and avoid arriving between 15:30 and 17:00.
