Dotonbori Riverside Dining Along the Canal
The south bank of the Dotonbori Canal packs more restaurants into 400 meters than most cities fit into a district. The facades compete for attention with oversized moving signs, a 6.5-meter mechanical crab, a giant blowfish, and a dragon curling off a building edge. Behind the signage, the kitchens turn out the dishes that earned Osaka its "kuidaore" reputation, the local phrase meaning to eat until you drop. Reservations are essential at the famous names, where wait times can stretch to three hours on weekends.
Kani Doraku: The Giant Crab
Kani Doraku Dotonbori Honten is the restaurant behind the moving crab that has clawed at the air above Dotonbori since 1962. The crab measures 6.5 meters across and its legs and claws animate every few seconds. Inside, the menu centers on snow crab from the Sea of Japan, served as sashimi, grilled, in hot pot, and as tempura. A crab course starts at 6,500 JPY per person, while the takeaway Crab Meat Bun sold only at this location costs 500 JPY and draws a steady line at the street window. The main store is open 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and reservations through the website are recommended to avoid the walk-in queue.
Zuboraya and the Fugu Tradition
Three minutes west along the canal, Zuboraya operates two Dotonbori branches marked by the giant fugu lantern hanging above the entrance. Zuboraya has served pufferfish since 1945, and every chef holds the licensed fugu preparation certification required by Japanese law. The signature dish is tessa, fugu sashimi cut translucently thin and arranged in a pattern on a plate, priced around 2,800 JPY. Fugu hot pot, or techiri, feeds two for about 4,500 JPY. The restaurant also offers a full fugu course with sashimi, fried fugu, hot pot, and rice porridge for 5,500 JPY per person. Walk-ins are accepted but waits of 45 minutes are common after 6:00 PM.
Takoyaki, Yakitori, and Izakaya Options
For faster and cheaper eating, the canal side has a dense run of takoyaki and yakitori stalls. Takoyaki Takomasa, at 1-4-15 Dotonbori, is known for its television commercial and serves eight-piece boxes for 600 JPY. The octopus dumplings here are cooked firm, with a crisp shell and a soft center, topped with sauce, bonito flakes, and aonori seaweed. Kinryu Ramen operates three locations along the boardwalk, each marked by a giant dragon sign, and serves a bowl of tonkotsu ramen for 900 JPY, open until 5:00 AM. For yakitori, the narrow lanes behind the canal around Soemoncho hold dozens of izakaya where skewered chicken thigh, skin, and liver run 130 to 200 JPY per stick, and a large draft beer costs 500 JPY.
Where the Canal Path Leads
The Tombori River Walk runs along the north bank, a pedestrian promenade that connects Tazaemonbashi Bridge in the east to Ebisubashi in the west. The path is lined with cafes and smaller restaurants, and it is where boat cruise passengers wave back at diners eating on the terraces above. Hozenji Yokocho, a stone-paved alley one block south of the canal, holds traditional izakaya and kappo restaurants in buildings that survived the wartime air raids. The alley's Hozenji Temple, covered in moss from decades of water-splashing prayers, sits at its center.
