About This Event / イベントについて
The 北御堂盆おどり (Kitamido Bon Odori) is a two-night Obon dance held at Kitamido — the common name for Nishi-Honganji Osaka Betsuin, a Jodo Shinshu temple in Nippombashi, a short walk from Namba and Honmachi. It is one of the summer fixtures that closes out Osaka's bon odori season in mid-August.
The dancing starts in the evening around a yagura on the temple grounds, with food and drink stalls lining the approach. The atmosphere is local and unhurried — families, neighbourhood regulars, and visitors all dance together. Entry is free, no booking needed, and beginners are welcome to slip into the circle.
The event is light-rain-or-shine (小雨決行), with heavy rain cancelling. Pair it with a visit to nearby Nippombashi Denden Town or a walk down to Dotonbori — Kitamido sits right between Namba and Honmachi, so the rest of Minami is close.
