About This Event / イベントについて

On August 8, 2026 (Saturday), the final Saturday of the Obon season, the Dotonbori canal's floating boat stage hosts the 道頓堀盆おどりインターナショナル2026 (Dotonbori Bon Odori International 2026). The event runs 12:00–21:00: by day, a special stage floating on the canal presents idol live shows, an international exchange stage by Yell Gakuen, Japanese dance (Nihon Buyo), Kansai-based idol group performances, Tahitian dance, and a tachiguki stage show by the Sukedachiya Juhachiban troupe. From 18:00, open bon odori dancing begins to Kawachi Ondo, the Osaka-Kansai Expo theme song "Kono Chikyu no Tsuzuki o," and Yumeshima Ondo — anyone can join the circle, no experience needed.

The event set two Guinness World Records in 2015 on August 16 — "the world's largest bon odori" and "the largest number of people gathered in yukata," both with 2,025 simultaneous dancers. First held in 2010 as the "Dotonbori River Summer Festival," it has grown into a yearly Naniwa tradition that draws participants from across Japan and abroad. Food stalls (屋台) line the canal, and the event runs rain or shine (小雨決行) — only heavy rain cancels. It is the real August 8 Dotonbori event: a lively, participatory counterpart to the area's neon nightlife, and the most accessible way for visitors to experience an authentic Obon dance in central Osaka.
