Houzen-ji Sandou is the approach to Hozenji Temple, a Jodo-sect Buddhist temple founded in 1637 that sits, almost improbably, in the middle of Namba's brightest entertainment district. The temple is best known for its Fudo Myoo statue, which worshippers have poured water over for generations until it has become completely cloaked in soft green moss - a striking, quietly spiritual sight just steps from the neon of Dotonbori. The approach and the adjoining cobblestone alley, Hozenji Yokocho, keep the atmosphere of old Naniwa with their muted red lanterns, weathered stones and traditional shopfronts.
