EX LIBRIS Opens a Croissant Bakery in Dotonbori: 30 Varieties, French Butter, and the District's New Sweet Spot
On April 23, 2026, Osaka's newest bakery brand EX LIBRIS (エクスリブリス) opened three stores at once across the city — and one of them is in Dotonbori. The brand, run by the same company behind Namba's Japanese cafe Sosou Morita-en, is built around one idea: the croissant, made the Parisian way, served in a city that has never had a dedicated croissant bakery of this scale.
A bakery named after a bookplate
"EX LIBRIS" means bookplate — the small mark book-lovers used to press into the front of a volume to claim it as theirs. The brand says it chose the name to signal a similar kind of attachment: a bakery you choose for yourself, that you keep coming back to. The Dotonbori store is built for that kind of repeat visit — it sits at 1-3-14 Dotonbori, Dotonbori Park Building 1F, about a 7-minute walk from Namba Station, in the heart of the neon district.
The croissant: "Real Paris"
The signature product is the Real Paris Croissant (リアルパリクロワッサン). It is made with French butter, baked to a deep golden finish with many visible layers, a hearty bite, and a clean melt-in-the-mouth finish. The bakery says it is deliberately bigger than a typical Japanese croissant — closer to a Parisian one in both size and the way the layers shatter when you tear it.
From that base, the store builds out roughly 30 varieties: sweet croissants like the Caramel Fresh Cream Croissant and a Blueberry Danish, savoury ones like the Pain au Chocolat, plus a Cinnamon Roll made from the same croissant dough. The lineup rotates, so there is something new across visits.
Take-out, eat-in, and a Namba angle
The Dotonbori store is set up for take-out — perfect for visitors who want a sweet snack while walking the canal — but it also has a small 14-seat eat-in space (stools only). It is open 11:00–21:00, closed Wednesdays. The sister Minami-Senba store, a 5-minute walk away, runs a croissant all-you-can-eat lunch (3,480 yen, 90 minutes, reservation required) for those who want the full experience.
For Dotonbori, EX LIBRIS fills a gap. The district is famous for takoyaki, kushikatsu, and crab, but it has never had a dedicated croissant bakery with this kind of French-butter ambition. It is a different kind of sweet stop — one you can grab on the way to the Glico sign, eat by the canal, or take back to your hotel. For the many visitors who come through Namba each day, it is a new reason to pause in the neon district before dinner.
