Tombori River Cruise: Seeing Dotonbori From the Water
The Dotonbori Canal runs 2.5 kilometers through the heart of Minami, and the Tombori River Cruise puts you on it in an open-air boat that passes beneath 19 bridges and in front of the Glico sign. What You See From the Boat
The boat heads east from the pier, passing under Ebisubashi Bridge where the Glico sign hangs overhead. The crew pauses here for about two minutes, long enough for passengers to photograph the sign from below and for people on the bridge to wave down at the boat. Continuing east, the route passes the Kani Doraku crab sign, the giant moving octopus above Takomasa, and the Don Quijote Ebisu Tower Ferris wheel. The boat turns around near Nipponbashi Bridge and returns to the pier, completing the loop.
Longer Routes and the Water Gate
For a deeper look, Indy Cruise operates a 90-minute Dotonbori and Suimon round-trip course that passes through the water gate at the canal's mouth, the only cruise permitted to do so. The gate adjusts water levels between the canal and the Kizugawa River, and the boat sits inside the lock chamber as the doors close and the water rises or falls. The 90-minute course costs 5,500 JPY for adults and 3,300 JPY for children, departs from Minatomachi Pier near Namba Station Exit 26-B, and requires reservations at least three days in advance. The route continues past Nakanoshima, the Osaka City Central Public Hall, and toward Osaka Castle before returning.
Indy Cruise also runs a 50-minute Takoyaki Cruise for 4,400 JPY where passengers grill their own takoyaki on board, with staff teaching first-timers the technique. Food and drinks can be brought on any Indy Cruise boat, and the cabin has sofa seating for 12 with blankets available in winter.
Night Versus Day
The daytime cruise shows the architecture and bridge details clearly, but the night cruise is when the canal earns its reputation. Neon signs reflect off the water, the Glico runner glows overhead, and the Nakanoshima skyline appears as a lit backdrop.
