Jianji, formally known as Myoken-gu Rendo-zan Jianji, is a Nichiren-sect Buddhist temple located in the Dotonbori district of Osaka's Chuo Ward, at 1-chome Higashi 5-13. Affectionately known to locals as "Sennichimae no Myoken-san," the temple enshrines Myoken Daibosatsu (the deification of the North Star) alongside Shaka Nyorai (the historical Buddha) and Nichiren Shonin. Despite being situated in one of Osaka's most bustling entertainment and dining districts, the temple maintains a remarkably quiet, contemplative atmosphere that feels worlds away from the neon and crowds of nearby Dotonbori just a short walk away. The temple's unusual layout - with the worship hall incorporated into the ground floor of a building - reflects the practical realities of urban temple life in central Osaka. Jianji participates in the Osaka Metro "Sixty-Six Flower Goshuin Pilgrimage," offering seasonal flower-themed temple stamps (goshuin) that attract collectors and pilgrims from across the region. The temple also houses statues of Jogyo Bosatsu, Kishimojin (guardian of children), Benzaiten and other deities. It is located within walking distance of Nipponbashi Station on the Sakaisuji and Sennichimae lines, and can be contacted at 06-6213-0330. For visitors to Dotonbori seeking a moment of spiritual calm or those interested in Osaka's lesser-known religious heritage, Jianji provides an unexpected and peaceful sanctuary in the heart of one of Japan's most energetic nightlife and dining districts - a quiet temple where the city's deeper history endures.Based on 32 Google reviews
