Historic 1637 temple in Namba famed for its moss-covered, water-splashed Fudo statue.
法善寺 (Hozenji) is a Jodo-sect Buddhist temple founded in 1637 in the Namba district of central Osaka, just a short walk from the neon of Dotonbori. The temple is best known for its Mizukake Fudo-son, a statue of the fierce deity Fudo Myoo that worshippers splash with water rather than offering flowers or incense - a practice said to have begun when devotees without offerings poured water on the figure instead. Over the years, the constant splashing has coated the statue in a thick layer of green moss, giving it an otherworldly appearance unlike any other in the city. The temple sits at the head of Hozenji Yokocho, a narrow stone-paved alley lined with old-style restaurants and bars that preserves something of pre-war Osaka and offers a quiet contrast to the surrounding shopping streets. Despite fire damage during the Second World War, the temple has been rebuilt and remains an active place of worship, open to visitors around the clock. Worshippers come to make wishes, splash the Fudo statue and pause in a small oasis of calm amid the bustle of Minami, and the temple is listed as the 48th site of the Osaka New Forty-Eight Vows pilgrimage. Visitors seeking a moment of stillness, photographers drawn to the mossy statue and atmospheric alley, and anyone curious about the spiritual side of Osaka will find Hozenji a rewarding and easily reached stop. Its survival through centuries of change, and its unusual water-splashing ritual, make it one of the most distinctive cultural landmarks in the Dotonbori area.Based on 0 Google reviews
