法善寺 (Hozenji) is a Jodo-sect Buddhist temple founded in 1637 in the Namba district of central Osaka, just a short walk from the neon of Dotonbori. The temple is best known for its Mizukake Fudo-son, a statue of the fierce deity Fudo Myoo that worshippers splash with water rather than offering flowers or incense - a practice said to have begun when devotees without offerings poured water on the figure instead. Over the years, the constant splashing has coated the statue in a thick layer of green moss, giving it an otherworldly appearance unlike any other in the city.
