Historic bridge on Midosuji spanning the Dotonbori canal, an iconic Minami landmark.
Dotomboribashi, the Dotonbori Bridge, is the historic bridge that carries Midosuji avenue across the Dotonbori canal in the very centre of Minami. A crossing has stood here since the early Edo period - the canal itself was begun in 1612 by Yasui Douton and completed in 1615 - and the area on either side grew into Osaka's celebrated theatre and entertainment district, so the bridge has watched over four centuries of the city's nightlife and popular culture. The current steel girder bridge dates from 1936, measuring about 38 metres long and an unusually broad 43.6 metres wide, with generous pavements on both sides. Standing here gives you one of the classic Dotonbori views: the Glico running-man sign upstream, rows of giant illuminated billboards reflected in the water, and the constant flow of boats, rickshaws and pedestrians that gives the canal its famous energy, especially after dark. Whether you use it as a practical crossing between Shinsaibashi-suji and the Dotonbori dining strip, or simply pause mid-bridge for the obligatory canal-side photograph, Dotomboribashi is one of those quiet landmarks that quietly frames the whole Dotonbori experience.Operating hours not available
