New Andrew's Egg Tart Dotonbori Honten storefront in Sennichimae Shopping Street

Andrew's Egg Tart opened its relocated Dotonbori Honten on July 3, 2026, about four minutes on foot from the old shop that had served the neighborhood since 1999. The new flagship sits inside the Sennichimae Shopping Street at 1-7-5 Dotonbori, and it represents a deliberate narrowing of what the store sells: oven-fresh tarts only, no chilled items. The brand is betting the whole store on the idea that an egg tart pulled from the oven seconds ago is a different product from one that has been sitting in a display case.

The original Dotonbori Honten closed on April 26, 2026, after 27 years. The brand was born in that location in 1999, importing the egg tart recipe of Macau's Lord Stow's Bakery, developed by the Englishman Andrew W. Stow. For most of its run, the shop sold both bake-fresh tarts and chilled versions meant for taking home and reheating later. The chilled line is gone in the new store.

What the new store actually sells

The lineup is now limited to room-temperature, walk-out-with-it items. The anchor is the Original Egg Tart at ¥380 (tax included). Around it sit the seasonal and specialty tarts: Matcha Azuki, Strawberry, and a seasonal Lemon Cheese released May 1. Two new tarts launched with the store as Dotonbori Honten exclusives: a Chocolate tart (two layers, bitter chocolate over chocolate cream) and the brand's first savory item, a Quiche with spinach and bacon built on four cheeses.

The quiche is the more notable launch. The development team said it came from years of customers mentioning they ate egg tarts for breakfast and asking for a savory option. The spinach and bacon version uses the same flaky pastry base as the sweet tarts, so the texture is familiar, but the filling is a breakfast-style custard with cheese. It is sized for one person and priced as a single-serve item.

The three-day opening campaign

From July 3 to July 5, the store ran a Dotonbori Honten-only opening campaign. The Original Egg Tart dropped from ¥380 to ¥300. Anyone buying one or more tarts got a branded sticker, while stocks lasted. Spend ¥1,800 or more in a single transaction and you could pick one of three novelties: an acrylic keychain, an alcohol hand gel branded with the logo, or a silicone-ring acrylic charm. The novelties were limited to one per transaction.

The campaign pricing is gone now, but the regular menu is the reason to go. The shop is open 11:00 to 21:00 daily with no fixed closing day, and it is accessible from Namba Walk exits B20 and B22, about a three-minute walk. The decision to drop chilled goods means the store effectively cannot sell you a half-dozen to take home on a train, the way the old one could. It sells you one or two to eat now, while the pastry is still audibly crisp.

Why the move is a bet on foot traffic, not souvenirs

The old store's chilled tarts were a souvenir business. Tourists bought six-packs to take back to Tokyo or overseas. The new store ignores that entirely. The product it sells, oven-fresh tart, has a shelf life measured in minutes once the pastry cools. That is a tighter operational constraint, but it is also a sharper pitch: the only way to eat this specific tart is to stand in Dotonbori and buy it.

The location inside Sennichimae Shopping Street, rather than on the canal-front tourist strip, supports this. Sennichimae is a covered arcade that runs from Namba toward Nipponbashi, and it carries a steadier flow of local shoppers and visitors already walking between food stops. A bake-fresh tart shop fits that flow better than a souvenir-pack shop does. The brand also runs a separate online store for anyone who wants the chilled or shelf-stable products for home delivery.

If you are planning a visit, go hungry and go with the intention of eating the tart within ten minutes. The original is the benchmark; the quiche is the one to try if you have been here before.
