Gallery Nagai

Gallery Nagai is an art gallery on Shinsaibashi-suji, the historic covered arcade that runs north from Dotonbori through the old Semba merchant district of Osaka. The gallery is part of the same family as Ginza's Nagai Gallery, an established Tokyo art dealer founded in 1971 and run by Ryūnosuke Nagai, an appraiser familiar to Japanese television audiences from the antique appraisal programme Nandemo Kanteidan. The gallery's programme centres on nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and contemporary two-dimensional work, with rotating solo and group exhibitions and an annual open-call competition titled "Nihon no Kaiga" (Painting of Japan). The Shinsaibashi-suji location places the gallery within walking distance of Daimaru Shinsaibashi, Shinsaibashi Parco and the American-mura district, making it a natural stop for visitors combining a culture break with a shopping afternoon. Exhibitions change every two to three weeks, and works on view are available for purchase, from established names such as Hiroshi Senju to emerging artists selected through the open competition.
